Amanida de Xicoira

In Andorra summer is a time for festivals. Summer is the time to serve light but very cooling food that is much loved by Andorrans because of the cooling effect it gives.

So it's no surprise that one of Andorra's specialties, amanida de xicoira, is an all-time favorite.

Xicoira is one of a variety of expensive and healthy vegetables that grow on the many mountain slopes of Andorra. This dish is made using wild chicory leaves, bacon, and often snails are added. This sumptuous salad is yet another expression of Andorran culture which recognizes the importance of nutrition.

Crema Andorrana/Catalana

Similar to the famous crema Catalana in the south and crème brûlée which is popular in the north, Andorra's desserts are also mostly made up of soft custard-based dishes. But if the Catalan and French variants are just a layer of crunchy caramel, the Andorran version is different, it has a more savory taste.

On top of the custard made from milk and eggs, Andorrans will add a large spoonful of fresh and thick double cream. It is then topped with a thick caramel sauce which seeps into the pudding. The result is a dramatic effect that looks like the craggy, snowy mountains that surround Andorra.

As the peaks in Andorra are magnificent, so are these white peaks with a sweeter taste, very satisfying.

Escudella

Andorra's national dish is highly recommended for those of you who feel hungry. This is another winter food. Basically, escudella is boiled pork or a mixture of meat and vegetables.

The most authentic version of Escudella is the one made using a variety of meats including pork ear, veal, chicken and sausage. At Christmas, the dish is remade into sopa grossa by adding conchiglie or shell-shaped pasta.

This Andorran specialty is always served hot and fresh. This is one of the best Andorran food. So, if you visit Andorra, don't forget to try it.

Pa Amb Tomaquet

Tomaquet pa amb is an Andorran specialty that is served with other foods, especially meat dishes. This dish will always be found on trips in Andorra. Although the name sounds simple, this typical Andorran dish tastes no less delicious.

As in neighboring Catalonia, the custom of eating this bread begins with spreading a clove of garlic on a toasted slice of hard bread. This is followed by crushed tomatoes and finished with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt.

All that pleasure seeps into the bread without overpowering the taste and the result is bread with an extraordinary taste, a crunchy yet soft texture. This dish is very simple but very satisfying. To add to the enjoyment, you can add cold cuts of meat or eat it alone as a snack.

Torrijas

This sweet food is a typical dish of grandmothers in Andorra which is generally served during Lent and Easter. Torrija are slices of bread or rolls soaked in milk or wine with honey and spices.

After that, the bread was dipped in the egg and fried. The end result is similar to French toast, but much sweeter and more flavorful.

The Andorran custom is that after frying, the torrijas are rolled in sugar. There are also those who add strawberries on top. Many restaurants in Andorra also sell torrijas with lots of ice cream toppings.
