Sri Mulyani Indrawati, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D is the first Indonesian woman and person to serve as Managing Director of the World Bank. She took office on 1 June 2010 until she was recalled by President Joko Widodo to serve as Minister of Finance to replace Bambang Brodjonegoro, he took office again on 27 July 2016. Sri Mulyani was born in Bandar Lampung, Lampung on 26 August 1962.

Early Life


Sri Mulyani is the seventh child of Prof. Satmoko and Prof. Dr. Retno Sriningsih Satmoko who is a professor at Semarang State University. He was born in Tanjung Karang (now Bandar Lampung), Lampung Province on August 26, 1962.

Born into an educated family, his parents always stressed that education was important to him. There is very little information about his elementary school education, he is known to have attended SMP Negeri 2 Bandar Lampung from 1975 to 1978, after that he moved with his parents to Semarang and continued his education at SMA Negeri 3 Semarang from 1978 to 1981 with the title of school champion.

Since high school, Sri Mulyani was known as a smart student. Various organizations, extracurriculars and sports and he also served as student council president in high school. It is also known that from elementary to high school he used a bicycle to school.

Entered the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia


After graduating from high school, Sri Mulyani continued her education at the Development Study Program (ESP) Department of Economics at the University of Indonesia, in fact her parents hoped she would choose medicine or engineering. In 1986, he graduated with the title of best graduate.

After graduating, he then worked as a researcher at the Institute for Economics and Society Research (LPEM) and as a research assistant at the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia where he registered and was accepted to work before graduating.

Master and Doctorate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA


After several years, UI's Faculty of Economics offered Sri Mulyani a Masters scholarship abroad. Then he enrolled at the University of Birmingham in England and was accepted but he turned down the opportunity

Then he received an offer from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States while also offering a doctoral or Ph.D program for Sri Mulyani and he could also bring his family to live in America.

In 1990, he completed his master's program with a concentration in Public Finance and Urban Economy. Meanwhile, her husband, Tonny Sumartono, took the Master's program in Financial Management (Finance).

In America, Sri Mulyani and her husband lived mediocrely because only Sri Mulyani was funded by scholarships while her husband was forced to sell his car to pay for college.

Then, Sri Mulyani continued her Ph.D or Doctoral program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. While taking the doctoral program, Sri Mulyani worked as an assistant lecturer in statistics at her campus.

She gave birth to her first child, Dewinta Illinia, in the United States. Sri Mulyani's doctoral program was completed in 1992 with a dissertation on Income Tax, she completed her master's and doctorate in just four years.

From Deputy Director of LPEM UI and Become Minister of Finance


After completing his education, he returned to Indonesia and worked as deputy director of education and training at the Institute for Economics and Society Research (LPEM) at the University of Indonesia until 1995 and then he became Deputy Head of Research at LPEM until 1998. He also served as Head of the Masters Program in Policy Planning Public-UI until 1999. In the early 2000s, Sri Mulyani lived in Atalanta, United States of America and became a US-AID consultant and became a supervising lecturer as well as accompanying students living and studying in the United States.

In 2012, Sri Mulyani moved to Washington DC and worked as Executive Director at the IMF. After that, in 2004, Sri Mulyani returned to Indonesia after being appointed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the State Minister for Indonesia's National Development Planning in the United Indonesia cabinet until 2005.

Subsequently, he moved to become Minister of Finance. He even served as Coordinating Minister for the Economy during the SBY government. At that time, Sri Mulyani was associated with or involved in the Bank Century scandal which shocked Indonesia in 2008. Then in 2009 Sri Mulyani wrote a letter of resignation to President SBY.

In 2010, Sri Mulyani was then appointed as Managing Director of the World Bank replacing Juan Jose Daboub. He served at the World Bank until 2016 and moved to America, then returned to Indonesia after being appointed by President Joko Widodo as Minister of Finance in July 2016.

Sri Mulyani's name is not only known in Indonesia, but also in the international world. 2nd Indonesia by Globe Asia magazine.

During his tenure as Minister of Finance, he won a number of prestigious awards. Starting from the best finance minister award from Finance Asia magazine. Until the award as the world's best minister three times in a row.
