The Struggle of Resistance Until the Death of Cut Meutia

At first Tjoet Meutia fought against the Dutch with her husband Teuku Muhammad or Teuku Tjik Tunong. However, in March 1905, Tjik Tunong was captured by the Dutch and executed on the Lhokseumawe beach.

Before he died, Teuku Tjik Tunong advised his best friend Pang Nagroe to marry his wife and take care of his son Teuku Raja Sabi.

According to her husband's will, Tjoet Meutia then married Pang Nagroe and joined other troops under the leadership of Teuku Muda Gantoe. In a battle with the Marechausée Corps in Paya Cicem, Cut Meutia and the women fled into the forest. Pang Nagroe himself continued to fight until finally, he died on September 26, 1910.

Then, Cut Meutia got up and continued to fight with the rest of his troops. At that time, there were only 45 troops with 13 rifles. After reaching an agreement, they then left for Gayo to join the other troops.

On the way, at Paya Beuranang, they met Teungku Seupot Mata and then together they continued their journey to Gayo which was difficult and dangerous. On October 24, 1910, at the Krueng Peutoe junction, namely at Alue Kurieng, the group stopped to cook rice. There suddenly they were attacked by troops Christoffel (Marechausée).

The troops of Cut Nyak Meutia and Teungku Seupot Mata, whose strength was very small, were ready to face their opponents. The battle was very fierce. It was during that battle that Cut Meutia was shot in the leg and continued to sit on the ground. Cut Meutia did not give up, even with a drawn sword he continued to fight until he was finally killed by the enemy.

Before he died, Cut Meutia still had time to give a message to Teuku Syakh Buwah who was near him. He said simply, “Save my son, King Sabi. I leave him in your hands." And the mandate was carried out properly so that Teuku Raja Sabi, the son of Cik Tunong and Cut Meutia, survived to experience Indonesian independence, but in 1946, Teuku Raja Sabi was killed as mentioned in the social revolution in North Sumatra.

On December 19, 2016, for the services rendered by Cut Meutia, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, immortalized it in the Republic of Indonesia's new rupiah banknotes, namely the Rp.1,000 denomination.
