Invention of the Steam Engine by James Watt

James Watt is a Scot who is often associated with the inventor of the steam engine and also a key figure in the Industrial Revolution. In fact, Watt was not the first to invent a steam engine. A similar design was made by Hero from Alexandria at the beginning of AD. In 1686 Thomas Savery patented a steam engine used to pump water, and in 1712, Thomas Newcomen also patented a similar invention with a more perfect version, but Newcomen's machine was still of low quality, less efficient and could only be used to pump water from coal mine.

In 1764, Watt became interested in the steam engine because he noticed Newcome's less efficient steam engine while he was repairing it. Although he only received a year's education as a toolmaker, he had great talent. He made improvements to Newcomen's steam engine.

In 1769, Watt's first success, namely the addition of a reinforced separate chamber, was patented. He also invented separator insulation to prevent heat loss in steam cylinders and in 1782, he invented the dual engine. With a few minor improvements, these updates resulted in increasing the efficiency of steam engines by four times or more.

In 1781, Watt invented a set of gears to convert a machine's turning motion into rotary motion. In 1788, he succeeded in inventing an automatic circular motion control that could make machine speed controllable automatically. In 1790, he also invented a pressure gauge. In addition he created a speedometer, a pointer and a steam control device.

In 1775, Watt collaborated with Metthew Boulton, an engineer and entrepreneur. After 25 years, their company produced steam engines in large quantities and this made them very rich. The double working steam engine invented by Watt in 1769 played an important role in the industrial revolution.

The Birth of the Industrial Revolution

Besides the power benefits for factories, the steam engine also has great benefits in other fields. In 1783, the Marquis de Jouffroy in Abbans succeeded in using a steam engine to propel ships. In 1804, Richard Trevithick created the first steam locomotive. None of the fledgling models were commercially successful. Within a few decades, both ships and trains produced revolutions in both land and sea transportation.

The Industrial Revolution took place almost simultaneously with the American and French Revolutions. Even though it seemed trivial at the time, it is now clear how the Industrial Revolution seemed to have outlined a far more important meaning for human life than the significance of the political revolution. Therefore, James Watt is classified as one of the people who has an important influence on history.
