The Meaning Behind the Colors of the Thai Flag

The Thai flag or in Thai is called Thong Trairong, has red, white and blue colors. This flag shows five horizontal lanes with the blue stripe in the middle being twice as large as the other lanes.

The red color represents the country, the white color represents religion, while the blue color represents the king. The length and width of the Thai flag are 3:1. The Thai flag was unveiled on September 28, 1917.

Prior to using the flag with the above colors, namely red, white and blue, Thailand used a flag with red colors and no pattern. This flag was precisely used during the reign of King Narai who ruled from 1656-1688.

After that, as reported by Wikipedia, various kinds of symbols are designed on the background such as a white chakra (a wheel related to Buddhism), a white elephant inside the chakra or a white chakra with the sun inside.

In official records, the Thai flag was first designed in 1855 by King Mongkut (Rama IV), featuring a white elephant (royal coat of arms) on a red background, as a non-patterned red flag was unsuitable for use in the international arena.

In 1916, the Thai flag was changed again according to the form that is used today. But at first, the stripe in the middle was red like the stripe around the flag. In 1917, the red color was replaced with blue, which is the color of Friday for the Thai people and also the birthday of King Rama VI.

Elephants are a typical animal of Thailand

Thailand's signature animal is the white elephant. Not surprisingly, Thailand is often referred to as the land of the White Elephant.

The White Elephant itself symbolizes a monarchy based on law so that the kingdom is in a state of peace and prosperity. This elephant is also associated with the birth of the Buddha.

According to myth, the Buddha's mother dreamed of a white elephant giving her a gift of a lotus flower, a symbol of wisdom and purity, on the night of Buddha's birth.
