The Meaning Behind The Malaysian Flag

The flag is a symbol of the greatness of a country and in it encapsulates a deep meaning for all its citizens. Just like Indonesia with its Sang Saka Merah Putih, Malaysia also has its own pride in its national flag which is called Jalan Gemilang.

The flag has an equal pattern of 14 red and white (transverse) stripes, starting with a red stripe on the top and ending with a white stripe which represents the number of members in the alliance of 13 states plus the United Kingdom.

Historically, the inclusion of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore into the Malay Land Alliance has created a new country, namely Malaysia. With this inclusion, the flag of the Malay Land Alliance was adjusted to include the new countries.

The Malay kings and governors at the Majlis Raja-Raja meeting prior to the formation of Malaysia allowed the design of the Malaysian Flag following the pattern of the Malay Land Fellowship Flag with adjustments to the number of dashed stars 14 to indicate 14 new states for the Malaysian Federation.

Interestingly, even though Singapore had broken away and became its own country on August 9, 1965, the lines and 14 broken stars have continued to be determined until now. Now the 14-pointed stripes and stars represent equal membership in the 13-country Guild and the Guild Kingdom.

The meaning of the Malaysian National Flag

Jalan Gemilang is patterned with 14 red and white (transverse) lines of equal width, where the number 13 represents the number of states or alliances, namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu.

The dark blue section at the top on the left leads down to the top of the fifth red line, symbolizing the unity of the Malaysian people. The dark blue section contains a crescent moon symbolizing the Religion of Islam – the official religion of Malaysia.

The 14 broken stars are the sign of the fusion of the 13 countries and the Guild Kingdom. The yellow color of the moon and stars is the color of the Kings for His Majesty Kings. The red color also symbolizes courage and the white color symbolizes purity. Meanwhile, the blue color represents unity.

A Brief History of the Gemilang Line Flag

As reported by Wikipedia, the initial idea for Jalan Gemilang emerged in 1949, with the approval of the Majlis Raja-Raja an institution was formed to consider and make accounts related to the flag design for the new Malay Land Alliance. For this purpose a competition was held to design a new Malay Land Fellowship flag in 1949.

This national ranking contest was organized by the Federal Legislative Assembly and attended by 373 employees. Of these, three new flag designs for the Fellowship of the Malay Lands were selected.

1. The first design is a crossed keris symbol in the middle surrounded by 11 five-pointed stars.
2. The second design is almost similar to the first design, but the 11 five-pointed stars are arranged in two circles around the crossed keris.
3. The third design is 11 blue and white stripes with a yellow moon and star on the left edge.

After being amended several times, the final draft was examined at the meeting of the Kings on 22 and 23 February 1950. On 19 April 1950, the Commonwealth Legislation Meeting passed the proposal put forward by the Acting Chief Secretary of State.

The design of the flag was finally accepted by King George VI on May 19, 1950. Thus, for the first time the Malay Land Fellowship flag was hoisted in an assembly. Malay Kings and Servants of King George VI.
