The flag of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) consists of a white compass symbol on a dark blue background.

The compass symbol has four white lines representing the depiction of the four cardinal points. The flag was adopted three years after the signing of the treaty and has remained the organization's identifying symbol since 1953.

The origin of the emblem is still unclear although the basic design is attributed to members of the International Staff. The coat of arms and colors of the NATO flag have political, regional and cultural significance.

History of the NATO Flag

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded on April 4, 1949, when twelve nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to ward off threats from the Soviet Union. The first flag used by NATO was unveiled on October 5, 1951 by General Dwight Eisenhower, who helped design it.

The 1951 flag consists of a green field with the coat of arms of the European Allied Powers Headquarters (SHAPE), which still bears the flag. NATO began looking for a new emblem to distinguish it from SHAPE, a task handled by the then newly formed Information Policy Working Group. After some discussion, it was concluded that the flag for this organization needed a symbol, and would recommend it to the North Atlantic Council.

The Council determined that the draft should be “simple and conspicuous,” in addition to highlighting the “peaceful aims” of the Treaty that had been established; some proposals were rejected. A NATO emblem was finally adopted on October 14, 1953. The decision was announced by Hastings Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay – NATO's first Secretary General. Exactly two weeks later on October 28, where he also outlined the symbolism behind the chosen designs. He described the flag as "simple and non-offensive".

However, the flag was not universally received, and drew criticism from for example US Congressman John Travers Wood, who condemned the flag as a "weird and foreign fabric." He made the remarks in light of an alleged incident in which the flag of the United States was reportedly replaced with a NATO flag in Norfolk, Virginia, the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic.

The modern NATO flag was first flown on November 9, 1953, at the opening ceremony of the Atlantic Exhibition in Paris. However, little is known about the event, as there is no documentation of the speech delivered at the event.

The Symbolic Meaning of the NATO Flag

The blue sea area represents the Atlantic Ocean which is the backdrop for the signing of the NATO treaty. The compass symbol with four lines originating from the cardinal points represents the direction to the path of peace; as the main goal to be achieved by member countries.

The cultural meaning of the colors used revolves around a shared desire to maintain peace even though member countries may have distinct cultural differences. In addition, despite the diverse political systems of the countries represented in the organization, the NATO flag is a reminder of the organization created with the aim of maintaining political stability.

Critics

The NATO flag drew criticism over its adoption. US Congressman John Travers Wood, for example, has condemned it as a 'strange and foreign rag'. Wood's statement was made about the alleged incident in which the NATO flag was used in place of the US flag in Norfolk, Virginia.

Even so, the NATO flag is generally well received in various jurisdictions. The flag and compass symbol remain at the heart of NATO's identity even as the organization celebrates its 69th anniversary in 2018.
