The flag becomes an identity for a group or a country that has different meanings and meanings. In general, the colors and symbols on a flag have their own history, as well as the Cambodian flag.

The State of Cambodia or Cambodia is a country in the form of a constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia. This country is the successor to the Khmer empire that once ruled the entire Indochina Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries.

The country that is included in one of the ASEAN countries has a national symbol of a flag known as "Khmer". The flag is designed in the form of a horizontal rectangle with an officially recognized ratio of sizes of 25:16.

According to Wikipedia, the Cambodian flag has a horizontal tri-band consisting of two colors. The blue lines are at the top and bottom, while the red line in the middle (1:2:1 ratio) is filled with images of the Angkor Wat temple, a Hindu temple recognized as a national symbol. This flag design has existed since 1850 and has not changed until now.


The choice of flag colors is inspired by the country's cultural beliefs. Where blue is usually identified with freedom and brotherhood, cooperation, and unity among Cambodian people. On the other hand, red represents the meaning of courage and country. The color also represents the dominant religion in the country, namely Buddhism.

Besides that, the white color in the Angkor War temple images represents the state's religious beliefs and the virtue of purity. Red and blue were important colors during the era of Cambodia's Khmer Empire.

History of the Cambodian Flag


Basically the country of Cambodia has adopted a total of 10 different flags during its history since the mid 19th century. The country's national flag was first used between 1948 and 1970 and reintroduced in 1993.

The reintroduction of the flag coincided with the restoration of the monarchy in Cambodia and the election of the country's Constituent Assembly in 1993.

Historically, the Cambodian flag was first used in 1948 when the country was still a French protectorate. It survived after Cambodia gained self-government in 1953. Unfortunately, the flag was replaced in 1970 after the founding of the Khmer Republic.

Since then, Cambodia has adopted 6 other national flags, including the flag of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) which was used between 1992 and 1993 until the Khmer was reintroduced in 1993 when the country became a monarchy.
