The United States flag is a symbol of patriotism that has changed many times since its first creation, but its meaning has remained the same; one inseparable nation. A country's flag is usually the first thing another country sees.

The US flag is a banner in war and a symbol in times of peace and a symbol of pride for every American. There are some interesting facts about the American flag that you need to know.

Stars and stripes


The US flag was originally designed with 13 stars and 13 stripes. According to the Flag Act, which was first passed by Congress, the stars represented a new constellation. Over the years many people have associated meaning with the colors on the US flag, but there has never been an official statement regarding this.

The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the stars in the corners represent the states, one star for each state in the union. Since July 4, 1960, the stars on the flag have been increased to 50 to represent the 50 states of the United States of America.

Color


The colors of the United States flag have not been officially correlated with their meaning, but the official stamp of the US bears the same colors and it does provide a meaning. According to USFlags.org, “White stands for purity and chastity, red stands for resilience and courage, and blue stands for vigilance, tenacity and justice.” It can be assumed that these meanings also apply to flags.

History


On January 1, 1776, General George Washington's troops laid siege to Boston which was under British control. He ordered the display of the Grand Union flag, which has 13 alternating red and white stripes and a British Union Jack in the upper left corner.

In May 1776, Betsy Ross claimed to have sewn the first American flag by hand, though that claim remains unproven. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act, officially creating the American flag, with 13 stripes and stars.
