The black ring circle is filled with circles with blue and white squares. Imagine a famous automotive brand from Europe who is good at making premium cars and motorcycles. Identical to the slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" or "Ultimate Driving Machine". Yep, that's the Bayerische Motoren Werke aka BMW logo.
Well, if you think the roundel was inspired by plane propellers, take a look at its history below. Not completely wrong but not justifiable either. As commented by the Archive Director of the BMW Group Classic, Fred Jakobs on the official BMW website. “Most people believe that the BMW logo comes from the propeller. However, the reality is a bit different,” he explained.
Origin of Name
Identity begins with the discovery of the name BMW itself. Prior to the release of these three letters, the history of the manufacturer began as Rapp-Motorenwerke GmbH – in 1913 – based in Munich. At that time the car was not yet a common sight. Pun Rapp Motorenwerke is a manufacturer of aircraft engines which were then assembled as a whole into an airplane by Gustav Otto Flugmaschinefabrik (Otto).
Various factors made Otto bankrupt in 1916 and later changed to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). Shortly after, Rapp-Motorenwerke also changed its name. Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH appeared for the first time in 1917. It only changed its identity while the composition of the company remained the same. This includes technical equipment, assets and manpower.
The BMW name had been lost for several years. The Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from assembling aircraft engines, and they were also affected. Inevitably disappeared under the umbrella of the train brake company. Long story short, all of BMW's assets were eventually transferred to BFW, and the BMW name came back to the fore in 1922.

Motorenwerke Rapp Identity Conversion
When Rapp-Motorenwerke changed its name to BMW, the company's identity was also adjusted later. The outer black ring bearing the company name is part of the tradition. If previously it contained the words Rapp Motor along with a line ornament and two stars, then only three legendary letters with gold fonts and outlines were displayed.
The image of the horse chess piece is removed and then switched to the color match we know today. Blue and white cross in four squares. It represents the colors of the flag of the Kingdom of Bavaria (Bavaria) before it was freed from the monarchy. It was white and blue, but they were positioned upside down because local regulations at that time prohibited the use of symbols of power in commercial logos.
Interestingly, when the name changed in July 1917, BMW did not immediately have a logo. Even their first advertisement was not decorated with a representative symbol. On October 5, 1917, the new BMW badge was registered on the Imperial Register of Trademarks.
This was because the manufacturer did not have end consumers at that time. Its main business is the production and maintenance of aircraft engines for the German Air Force. "In the early days, the logo and its meaning were not shown to the public at all as it is today because BMW has no end customers," explains Fred Jakobs.

Not Coming from Rotor Rotating
Many people believe it all comes from the propeller of the plane. Yes, BMW's history is closely related to the world of aviation. But from the history of the roundel it is evident that the manufacturer only brought the image of the emblem of the ancestor and later adapted it with the Bavarian flag.
The myth originated from a BMW advertisement in 1929. It saw an airplane with rotating propellers bearing the Bimmer logo. This interpretation is intended to promote their new engine under license from Pratt & Whittney. Definitely in tune with the company's roots as an airplane expert. It was further strengthened in 1942 through the illustration of the BMW publication “Flugmotoren-Nachrichten” (Aircraft Engine News).
All that continues without any strong effort to straighten the story. “For a long time, BMW has made little effort to correct the myth that the BMW badge is a propeller,” explains Fred Jakobs. It's not entirely wrong that the history of the current BMW emblem is related to the propeller. But it is also not true that the company logo is a picture of the nose of an airplane.
